Google Suggest is a technology tour de force

Source:  nwfusion.com
Google Suggest is, at least on the surface, simple: It provides an auto-completion service as you enter a search term in Google. A list of possible queries that start with the text you've entered is displayed and changes as each new character is entered. Press the down arrow and the selected suggestion will be inserted in the search field.

Analysts: Merger Works for Adobe, But Customers May Suffer

Source:  publish.com

Analysts seem to be of one mind about the pending acquisition of Macromedia by Adobe Systems: It's good for Adobe, and Microsoft should watch out.

Adobe is strong with its industry-standard PDF platform, plus its Photoshop and Illustrator offerings. Meanwhile, Macromedia is known for its Flash software along with its Fireworks, Dreamweaver, FreeHand and Studio MX (a suite of those products), among other software programs.

Why buy Microsoft Office 2003?

____________________________________________________________

For those who wonder what all the hype is about for Microsoft Office 2003, this article will offer up some of the key benefits of the software suite.  Some of these key features may help you make a decision on whether or not an upgrade is right for you.

Article Jump:

Outlook

Shared Workspaces

Improved performance and connectivity to e-mail

Security and privacy

Protect company information

XML support

Simplify upgrades, administration, and support

Some of the greatest improvements in the Microsoft Office 2003 Suite are changes and improvements made in Microsoft Outlook.

Outlook

Outlook's makeover starts with the new vertical default view. On the left side, a navigation pane lists your e-mail accounts and folders; the middle in-box pane displays your received messages; and on the right, the reading pane (called the "preview" pane in earlier versions), shows the contents of the selected message.

Reading these vertical panes feels more natural, much like reading through a newspaper. You can see more messages at one time in the in-box, and you can view more text from the selected message in the reading pane without having to scroll. The new layout may look busy at first, but you'll soon find that the vertical orientation makes messages quicker and easier to read than they were in Outlook's previous horizontal preview pane. Click here to see a sample of the vertical orientation. Close the reading pane to see more of your in-box messages, or move the pane to the bottom to match Outlook's old look.

Shared Workspaces

Shared Workspaces can help employees see when team members are online, communicate with them in real time, and publish important task lists and files to a team Web site.

Improved performance and connectivity to e-mail

Outlook 2003 includes a new cached mode to increase reliability of connections, and improve performance and user productivity. The cached mode in Outlook 2003 downloads all necessary information to an employee's computer as it comes in—so that network performance issues do not affect the employee.

With Outlook 2003 and Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 running on Microsoft Windows Server 2003, employees can also securely access their Exchange server directly over the Internet. Once the feature is operational, Outlook 2003 can automatically connect to the Exchange server over the Internet when a direct connection to the Exchange server is unavailable. IT managers can eliminate the need to set up virtual private network (VPN) servers for e-mail access.

Note: Caching requires Exchange Server 2003.

Security and privacy

Office Professional Edition 2003 provides several methods to increase security and privacy - including digital certificates and signatures, data protection and recovery, and other program-specific features. Increased security measures in Outlook 2003 - such as the blocking of incoming messages that may contain viruses, HTML image blocking to prevent address validation, and improved rules to manage junk e-mail messages.  Outlook 2003 provides a junk e-mail filter that Microsoft updates periodically to ensure better protection.  This filter is not perfect, but works well overall.

Protect company information

Information rights management (IRM) functionality is a new policy enforcement technology in Office 2003 Editions that can help protect sensitive files and e-mail messages from unauthorized access and use. The IRM function can even set expiration dates on files.  This feature goes above and beyond the normal security that a server can offer by allowing certain people access to certain information while limiting what they do with that information (such as print or save to a disk).

XML support

XML support enables companies to develop solutions that standardize the creation and collection of information that would otherwise reside in binary files on computers and file shares. Businesses can help reduce the duplication of data and work that exists in many organizations today while improving the value of corporate information.  XML facilitates the smooth flow of data from one application to another.

XML support enables employees to access and analyze information from a variety of business systems—such as customer relationship management (CRM) applications, enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, or other line-of-business applications—all from within the familiar tools they use today. Employees can increase efficiency and productivity while taking advantage of existing investments.

XML support enables developers to build customized and industry-specific document solutions (or smart documents) that can help streamline processes and improve productivity without significant employee training or downtime.

Simplify upgrades, administration, and support

Improve distribution of Office Professional Edition 2003 to employees with low bandwidth connections to allow them to copy a compressed installation source locally and then install it from there. There is also no need to reboot after installation. Consistent file formats in Office 2003 help users share documents with those who have not yet upgraded.  With this feature, Microsoft Office 2003 can be purchased in stages, as your budget allows, and files will still be compatible with older versions of the Microsoft Office suite on other computers.

Sharepoint Services

Microsoft Office 2003 provides much tighter integration with Sharepoint, Microsoft’s intranet solution.

Pop-up Blocker Options

Many legitimate web sites on the Internet use windows that pop up in the middle of your screen to display a message. They might also open when you click a link or button on a Web site, and they might open either over or under the window you wish to view. Some pop-ups are helpful. For example, if you click an image to see a larger version, it might open in a pop-up window. Unfortunately, some pop-up windows can contain inappropriate content or can be a way for you to accidentally download dangerous software (called spyware or adware) onto your computer. See Volume 2 of the newsletter to read more on that topic.

Below is a guide to help in changing various Pop-Up Blocker settings.
